In this interview at the Berlin Security Conference, Christina Malm, the General Director of the Swedish Assessment and Conscription Agency, shares insights on the reintroduction of conscription and its potential relevance for Germany. Since reviving the system in 2017, Sweden has trained 30,000 conscripts, building a scalable defence force, while getting as well support for national service from the society. She emphasises the strengthened bond with national defence since Russia’s invasion in Ukraine. Malm addresses recruitment challenges, emphasizing that each country must adapt such systems to its legal and societal contexts. With Sweden poised to deepen its NATO commitments, Malm reflects on the enduring benefits of conscription, including enhanced recruitment for professional roles. While Germany considers similar measures, Malm stresses the importance of tailoring reforms to unique national circumstances rather than adopting a „copy-paste“ model.
