Total Defence Insights | Maj Gen (ret.) Reinhard Wolski
At the Berlin Security Conference 2025, Maj. Gen. (ret.) Reinhard Wolski, Chairman of the Conference, discusses the significant role of the partner nation, Sweden, in shaping the program. Wolski highlights Sweden’s contributions to panels and keynotes, particularly on topics related to the northern front, the Arctic, and civil-military integration. The partnership brought high-level speakers, including representatives from the Swedish monarchy, enhancing the conference’s depth and expertise.
Wolski also reflects on the concept of “total defence,” a comprehensive approach combining civilian and military efforts, which Nordic countries like Sweden and Finland have advanced significantly. While Germany and other nations are still developing such strategies, the discussions at the conference aim to broaden understanding and adoption of total defence principles. Looking ahead to the Conference on 3-4 November 2026, Wolski anticipates exploring strategic challenges across the Eastern and Southern fronts, the Mediterranean, and potentially the Indo-Pacific, while also considering the impact of climate change on military equipment and operations.
